cornwall Garden Design

Our garden design studio is located in Semley, on the border between Wiltshire and Dorset; our work regularly takes us throughout the UK and the South West region, into Devon and Cornwall.

Cornwall enjoys a mild climate thanks to the warming influence of the Gulf Stream. This allows gardeners to grow an incredible variety of plants, from Mediterranean herbs to exotic sub-tropicals. However, the county’s weather can also bring strong winds, salt spray, and heavy rainfall, so thoughtful design is key.

Cornwall, with its breathtaking coastline, lush valleys, and temperate climate, offers the perfect canvas for garden design.

Many parts of Cornwall experience strong coastal winds, making shelter essential in garden design. Natural windbreaks such as hedging or woven willow fences help protect delicate plants. Layered planting, with taller shrubs shielding more delicate flowers, also creates a microclimate for better growth.

Stunning landscapes and mild climate offer endless possibilities for garden design in Cornwall. Whether it is a wild coastal retreat, a classic English cottage garden, or an exotic tropical paradise, thoughtful plant choices, shelter from the elements, and sustainable practices all help create a breathtaking outdoor space.

Coastal gardens require low-maintenance with wind-resistant spaces. Some excellent choices include hardy coastal plants that can withstand salty winds such as Agapanthus, sea thrift, and Echiums.

Cornwall is famous for its picturesque stone cottages, often surrounded by traditional cottage gardens filled with roses, foxgloves, and hollyhocks. Winding paths, stone walls, and informal planting styles enhance these spaces.

Lush sub-tropicals like tree ferns, palms, and Gunnera thrive in Cornwall’s sheltered spots. Cornwall’s deep valleys provide the perfect environment for woodland gardens. Shade-loving plants like hostas, ferns, and bluebells flourish under native trees such as beech and oak.

The County of Cornwall

Cornwall is home to some of the most beautiful gardens in the UK.

Once left to nature after World War I, the Lost Gardens of Heligan were rediscovered in the 1990s and have since been transformed into one of Cornwall’s most famous gardens. Here, you can explore over 200 acres of woodland walks, flower-filled gardens, and even a subtropical jungle.

Trebah Garden is a lush, subtropical valley garden; loved by visitors for over 180 years; that winds down to a private beach on the Helford River. With its rich collection of exotic plants, colourful hydrangeas, and giant Gunnera, Trebah offers a tropical escape that feels worlds away from the UK.

Glendurgan Garden is a delightful mix of exotic plants, wildflower meadows, and charming woodland trails. The garden features a famous 19th-century cherry laurel maze, perfect for families and adventurers. At the bottom of the valley, you’ll find the picturesque village of Durgan with its small beach overlooking the Helford River.

One of the most famous attractions in Cornwall, the Eden Project is an ecological marvel featuring the world’s largest indoor rainforest. The massive biomes house thousands of plant species from tropical and Mediterranean climates, offering visitors a truly immersive experience. Beyond the biomes, the outdoor gardens showcase native and exotic plants thriving in Cornwall’s mild climate.

Situated on a peninsula with breathtaking views of the Fal River, Trelissick Garden is another National Trust treasure. This garden features sweeping lawns, wooded trails, and an impressive collection of hydrangeas, camellias, and azaleas. The historic house and surrounding parkland add to the charm of this peaceful retreat.

Lanhydrock is a grand Victorian estate surrounded by stunning gardens and parkland. The formal gardens feature neatly clipped hedges, vibrant flowerbeds, and towering trees, while the wider estate offers miles of walking and cycling trails. Spring is particularly spectacular here, with carpets of bluebells and magnolia blossoms.

From subtropical landscapes to historic estates and wildflower meadows, Cornwall’s gardens, surrounded by nature and truly inspiring.
