A HAMPSHIRE GARDEN
a work in progress
Located within the New Forest National Park this Grade II listed 18th century Hampshire house is set within formal gardens with a walled garden. The estate beyond is home to an existing mix of mature woodland, lakes and streams, pasture and productive arable land. At the boundary to the formal gardens sits an ornamental lake, and a number of specimen trees, while to the west of the house is an arboretum of mostly mature rhododendrons, magnolias and azaleas.
After careful site analysis its was apparent that several areas leading to the house needed to be re-considered to make the most of the views towards the front facade of the house as you approached, as well as from the house back across the parkland.
The proposed plan widens the ornamental lake around front of house as much as possible without affecting the existing trees, and to deal with the rise and fall in the topography, the changes to the driveway allow it to meander through the parkland to create a more gentle gradient to the drive. This enabled the first sight of the south facing house to be an impressive view across both the parkland and the lake with the house sitting square in the landscape giving views of the handsome full front facade of the property.
